Learn from the past. A supreme bed that embodies 1200 years of wisdom and the breath of trees.
Wood that grows vigorously in rich forests is processed in its pure form.
This is a powerful yet beautiful eco-conscious bed that combines the craftsmanship of Japanese artisans who make the most of this precious Japanese resource, the sensibility that has been revived since the Nara period, and the knowledge that Iwata has accumulated as an opinion leader in bedding manufacturing.
From ancient Japan to the present.
Learn about the origins of bedding.
Inside the Shosoin Repository is a bed that was built over 1,200 years ago.
Its name is "Gosho (Ontoko)." Surprisingly, Japan's oldest bed was designed to provide a comfortable sleep, taking into account the country's climate, where temperature and humidity change dramatically with the seasons. Iwata considered the sensibility and superior functionality of the "Ontoko," the origin of bedding. Bringing together the wisdom and skills of designers, wood producers, sawmills, and furniture workshops, we created a bed that fits into modern living environments. The ultimate sleep and aesthetic sense, revived from ancient Japan to modern Japan.
"Ontoko" is an old yet new proposal from Iwata.
We make full use of precious resources. Finished with domestic solid wood.
We use domestic solid wood, one of the few renewable resources. We process even scraps and curved wood that cannot be used for construction, breathing new life into them as furniture materials. We carefully design the product so that even the smallest knots remain as individual features.
Birch wood from Hokkaido
The broadleaf trees grown in Hokkaido are harvested in a planned manner, minimizing the environmental impact. The wood has a fine grain and a refined texture, and the longer it is used, the more it will become familiar to the eye. Using delicate and advanced seasoning techniques, it is processed into laminated lumber suitable for furniture.
Cypress from Gifu Prefecture
Hinoki cypress has been used since ancient times as a building material for shrines, temples, and homes. The floorboards of "ontoko" retain the characteristics of hinoki cypress, with its light pink wood grain and highly fragrant aroma.
Frame Color
Available in two warm colors. Made from Hokkaido birch wood with a smooth texture.
Leg Height
There are two types: a low-rise type that makes the room look larger, and a high-rise type that makes use of the space under the bed.
Material: Body: Hokkaido birch, Slats: Gifu cypress
Paint/Finish: Urethane

Oeko-Tex is an international safety standard for textile products that prohibits or restricts the use of substances harmful to the human body in textile products, and is issued only to products that meet the standards.
The Iwata brand receives certification for each product. Not only the main materials (feathers, natural wool, and fabrics), but also all components used in bedding, such as threads and zippers, meet the standards and have been proven to be safe down to the single thread.
